July 26th Raag-Mala presentation at Celebration Zone during Pan Am and Parapan Am games
Sounds of sitar, taus and tabla will waft through Harbourfront Centre on a hot afternoon in July. Welcome to the Harbourfront Theatre, as Raag-Mala Toronto presents a program of shastria sangeet from 4:00 to 5:30 pm.
Raag-Mala will present two sets of instrumental music - the first featuring the talented Chana Brothers, Hardeep on taus and Jasmeet (“Jammi”) on tabla , and the second with Anwar Khurshid on sitar and Kiran Morarji on tabla.
The taus, a bowed string instrument from north India, which is very popular in the Punjab is an ancestor of the more widely-known dilruba. The dynamic Chana brothers will offer melodies based on afternoon raags set for contemporary audiences, followed by a tabla solo by Jammi.
The set by Anwar and Kiran will be a raagmala – a seamlessly woven garland of raags , which will showcase the beauty and accessibility of raag music.
Before making the sitar his primary focus, Anwar studied vocals, flute and tabla. He also plays with musicians from other genres, including Blues, Jazz, African, Middle Eastern, Japanese, and Chinese.
While Kiran is a disciple of tabla maestro Ustad Zakir Hussain of the Punjab gharana, he is also adept in styles from other gharanas such as Delhi, Lucknow, Farrukhabad, Ajrada, and Benares.
Celebration Zone, which opens on July 10th, will highlight the diversity of cultures in Ontario and is expected to attract a quarter million visitors to see great shows, dine and shop. The July 26th concert marks the second year that Raag-Mala is presenting music with partners at Harbourfront Centre.
